BACKGROUND

The Grantley Prescod Memorial Primary school is a co-educational public school situated in St. Barnabas Heights, St. Michael. The school has a roll of approximately 260 students, inclusive of a unit housing approximately 30 students who require special education. Most of the pupils who attend the school are from the surrounding communities, primary of which is the Pine Housing Area. According to Devonish (2018), in his report on crime and violence in at-risk communities, the Pine is an area that is characterised by low income housing, a large proportion of unemployed youth who lack necessary academic qualifications, and individuals who resort to criminal and deviant activities to meet their economic and income needs. As a result, many of the students of the Grantley Prescod Memorial Primary School can be said to be from low socio-economic homes whose family members are likely to have attained a lower level of education.
